Resumo

Este artigo se ocupa, em um tom ensaístico, dos espaços que intermedeiam elementos arquitetônicos, escultóricos, históricos, narrativos ou discursivos e que compõem a complexa experiência multissensorial até então negligenciada pela fortuna crítica convencional de jardins. Deslocando-se dos recursos utilizados em análises tradicionais dessa linguagem, John Dixon Hunt percorre os jardins de Little Sparta na Escócia; Rousham na Inglaterra; e Bomarzo na Itália, para focalizar a paisagem que preenche e alimenta uma rede de intersecções materializada nos jardins, em suas relações que complexificam a imbricação profunda entre inúmeras linguagens, espaço e tempo, natural e humano. Como discutirmos jardins e paisagens sem focar inteiramente em vários elementos que invocam comentários iconográficos ou literários? Um conjunto generoso de análises está focado nos itens presentes dentro de uma paisagem, a respeito dos quais é tão relativamente fácil oferecer considerações explicativas de significado ou de patronato que tendemos a esquecer a abundante quantidade de espaço entre eles. Então, como nós respondemos a eles?

The Spaces in Between

Abstract

This article deals, in an essayistic approach, with the spaces that intermediate architectural, sculptural, historical, narrative or discursive elements and that make up the complex multi-sensory experience hitherto neglected by the conventional critical commentary of gardens. Moving away from the resources used in traditional analyzes of this language, John Dixon Hunt travels through the gardens of Little Sparta in Scotland, Rousham in in England and Bomarzo in Italy to focus on the landscape that fills and feeds a network of intersections materialized in the gardens, in their relationships that complicate the deep imbrication between several intermedia, space and time, natural and human. How do we discuss gardens and landscapes with-out focusing entirely on various elements that invoke iconographic or literary commentary? A generous set of analyzes is focused on those items present within a landscape, about which it is so relatively easy to offer explanatory considerations of meaning or patronage that we tend to forget the abundant amount of space between them. So how do we respond to them?
